2020 Honda CBR1000RR-R short subframe for less damage after crashing

We have developed a short aluminium racing subframe for the 2020 Honda CBR1000RR-R in cooperation with various racing teams. Why mounting this part is an important step when building your race bike?

Carbonin short aluminium subframe for the Honda CBR1000RR-R.
The main reason is that there’s a few items on a road-legal bike you won’t need on the racetrack: a backseat, turn signals, backlight and license plate holder. That’s why the Carbonin short subframe doesn’t have all those fittings, holes and threads like the basic subframe and that’s why it also can be a bit shorter.

The result: if you slide and (oh, god, please no!) your bike starts rolling (especially after so-called “high-sider” type of a crash) there’s less damage made on the back of your bike, including on the main frame where the subframe is attached. Why? Shorter frame is sticking out less from the bike and also if it touches the ground, the forces are smaller. It should be clear to anyone that didn’t skip physics lessons in primary school.

Carbonin short subframe is made of high-quality aluminium, anodized in black. It’s designed to fit with Carbonin avio- or carbon-fibre single race seat, including the battery, relay, fuses, ABS hydraulic unit, cables etc.

All Carbonin products are developed in cooperation with top racing teams to be used by professional and amateur racers all around the globe. Only the best lightweight and durable materials are used and when it comes to accuracy of final product, there’s no doubt. It fits – it fits your bike and your needs.

The first World title for Carbonin with Jeffrey Buis winning the WorldSSP300 class

With Jeffrey Buis, a member of MTM Kawasaki Motoport team, winning the 2020 World Supersport 300 class on a Carbonin-equipped Kawasaki Ninja 400, this is the first ever World title for a Slovenia-based carbon and avio fibre specialist.

Carbonin was involved in the world of roadracing since the beginning; it’s founder Peter Kuduz was a racer himself in a national and regional road racing championship when he found a lack of quality parts for his race bike: they just didn’t fit! That pushed him to start making his own bike parts.

The quality and perfect fitting of early Carbonin’s avio fibre and carbon fibre products was quickly recognised by racing teams in Europe and worldwide, and riders were winning individual races in many championships and cups (WSBK, BSB, EWC, IDM,…), but there hasn’t been any World Championship won until 18th of October 2020 when Jeffrey Buis (MTM Kawasaki Motoport) secured the WorldSSP300 title in the final race of the season in Estoril, Portugal.

Peter Kuduz, Carbonin CEO: “Partnership with MTM Kawasaki Motoport team is relatively young, we started cooperating in late 2019, but the team had a big impact on the development of the race fairings for the new Ninja 400. During winter we’ve been working together to develop an optimal race body, their comments and demands were crucial for making a product that we can be proud of and a product that is helping fantastic riders to win races. Besides our well recognized first-class quality we’ve improved aerodynamics to reduce the turbulences around the seat unit, increased cooling of the radiator and the engine and enabled more directed airflow towards the air-box which all resulted in better engine performance. I want to congratulate the talented young racer Jeffrey Buis, the team manager Mr. Ludo van der Veken and everyone else from the MTM Kawasaki Motoport team for a fantastic season.”

Ludo van der Veken, MTM Kawasaki Motoport team manager: “We’re very satisfied with cooperation we have with Carbonin. Their high quality products are what we need in our team. The bikes were in perfect shape this year. All our riders were winning races and we won the Team Championship and a World Championship title with Jeffrey Buis, so it was a fantastic season. All our great partners made this happen. Also Carbonin was part of it and we’re proud of that!”

Motorcycle race fairing: Avio Fibre or Carbon Fibre, which one suits my needs?

Carbon or Avio fibre? The colour is not the only difference.

Avio fibre and carbon fibre are two most commonly used materials in the world of motorcycle racing, each of them with its’ own advantages. Let’s take a look into the details.

Avio Fibre

Avio fibre side panel for the 2020 Honda CBR 1000 RR-R. The black triple wings are 3D printed.
The name ‘avio fibre’ comes from aviation as this technology is widely used for covering the open structures on aircrafts. In the world of motorcycle roadracing it’s an alternative to standard fibre glass fairings. Comparing the two, avio fibre is better in many ways: it’s stronger, lighter, much more flexible and, maybe the most important, it doesn’t brake or crack that easy. For sure something a racing team is looking for is to have less damage after a slide or a crash.

The reason for that is high quality synthetic fibre (avio cloth) with tighter fiber density in combination with epoxy resin. Though avio fibre is still not as strong as carbon fibre, in Carbonin we reinforce all our avio fibre parts edges and the places of fitment (where the parts are fitted with the bolts) with some extra carbon fibre stripes for optimal combination of strength and flexibility.

All our avio fibre parts come in a white gel coat, which offer a smooth and easy finish, which enables us to easily upgrade and personalize the final look with spray paint and/or decals design. It’s also possible to just put the stickers directly on the white gel coat.

Carbon Fibre

Carbon fibre: ultra light, strong and prestigious material.
Carbon Fibre (also called graphite fibre) is the most prestigious material that’s used not only in racing but also in aerospace, military and other competition sports where lightness is the most important factor. It’s fibres measure only about 5-10 micrometres in diameter (about 10 times thinner than a human hair!) and are mostly composed of carbon atoms. Several thousand carbon fibers are bundled into a tow that are then woven into a fabric. In Carbonin we mostly use prepreg (pre-impregnated) fibres that are then vacuumed in moulds and finally heat treated (‘baked’) at 130°C (266°F). After the process the parts are polished for the final shiny look – without any extra varnishing. The result are great looking light and strong top end quality parts that precisely fit on the bike. The carbon fibre parts can be used raw or can be spray painted and embellished with decal design stickers (we offer complete customisation of decal designs).

The material has several advantages: it’s ultra light, has high stiffness and tensile strength, plus it’s also temperature and chemical resistant. Feedback from our partnered racing teams is that carbon fibre parts are not as flexible as carbon-reinforced avio fibre parts (mentioned above), but when you’re looking to save every gram possible, carbon fibre is still the best choice – total weight difference can be up to 0,5 kilograms (1,1 pounds) on a fully equipped race bike when comparing avio and carbon fibre race fairing.

Our suggestion: make a combination!

When preparing a race bike, use avio fibre for the most exposed parts when crashing (like lower, front, side panels and the seat) and combine that with pure carbon fibre smaller parts like front and read mudguards, fuel tank cover, clutch, frame and engine protectors (which can be huge saviours!) etc. This way you will get a light, durable and not too expensive bike with a fantastic look!

honda-cbr1000rr-fireblade-carbonin-instalation-1

Honda CBR 1000 RR-R Fireblade 2020 race fairing installation tips (carbon or avio fibre) - video & detailed photos

Is changing the fairings complicated? No, but there’s still important to follow some guidelines.

If you’re a racer, then you most probably have some experience with maintaining, fixing or at least preparing your bike for the track and that’s why we believe most of you can do the installation without taking your bike to the mechanic workshop. But still there’s a few hints that can help you save some grey hair. Let’s take a look on transformation of production Honda CBR 1000 RR-R Fireblade into a complete Carbonin carbon fibre race kit.

When attaching the front and lower parts, it’s important to do it the following order: FIRST you attach the lower fairing, THEN the left and right side pannel and FINALLY the upper race fairing (the mask).

When attaching the lower fairing, first you just put in the bolts on both sides gently, then you fix the bolt on the right side and attach side panels and upper fairing. When all the parts are in their place adjust the position of the bracket on the low left side (next to the gearbox shift lever). When you have a feeling that holes are on their exact place, you finally tighten the bracket screw. It’s important not to force the parts; trust us, we put in a lot of effort to make them fit exactly where they should.
The low left bracket screws are the last one to be tightened.

If you’re transforming your bike into a real superbike machine and therefore you’ve decided to put on Carbonin short aluminium subframe, make sure you put the seat brackets in a way that the bolts are on the outer side of the part. Chances to do it right are 50-50, but if you do it wrong, the single race seat won’t fit.

The bolts must be on the outer side of the subframe.
For the fixation of the airbox cover with side pannels you’ll need to attach additional two brackets. Pay attention to keep the lower side paralel with the level of the original subframe.
Positioning the brackets for the airbox cover with side panels.
To make sure not to loose any bolts and, on the other side, to be on the safe side with the tightening torque, we suggest to put a drop (only a small drop!) of Loctite 243 on each bolt.
Use Loctite 243 to secure the bolts.

As all our parts come with predrilled holes and preinstalled DZUS fasteners, you won’t need to do any drilling and searching your magic screw box for the right bolts and nuts and washers.

We hope these short instructions will help you to enjoy your time in the garage. If there are still some questions, contact us or your local Carbonin importer for more information.

Product release: Carbonin avio and carbon fibre race fairings for Yamaha YZF-R1 2020

We’re proudly presenting new product on which we’ve been working in last few months. We completed development and testing of race fairings for one of the most awaited superbikes of this year, the new Honda CBR 1000 RR-R Fireblade & Fireblade SP. Precisely hand crafted, light and durable parts are now available in both, carbon and avio fibre.

The biggest challenge was designing the side panels with integrated aerodynamic wings, which are used on a production Honda for the first time. We decided to assemble it from three parts – the side panel, the wings and the cover. In carbon fibre version the wings are made of carbon fibre while in avio fibre configuration we decided to use 3D printing technology to produce the wings. Each of these three parts has its own code so it’s possible to order parts individually in a case of slide or crash.
